If this for a class the best place to start would be the assignment instructions, which might give you some guidelines and starting points. :-)
Otherwise we would recommend the Ancestry database in Galileo. The one big trick with Ancestry is that you have to be on the GHC campus to use it. On the Ancestry home page you'll find several good "getting started" guides that will start you in the right direction.
